My photography business was born out of desperation.
I was living on food stamps in a sad, small apartment and driving a car that was about 5 seconds away from breaking down. I didn’t own a camera and I started my photography business with borrowed gear.
As a self-taught photographer, I didn’t understand how to use studio lighting and it scared me for a long time. I had it stuck in my head that it was a skill I had to be professionally trained to do. The problem was that the weather in Seattle (where I live and work) is anything but reliable. There were big parts of the year when I didn’t have the light I needed to create the work I knew I was capable of.
This caused some MAJOR problems in my business. I was scheduling all my shoots around weather reports and losing money in the process.
Not having this one skill affected everything: my work, my business, my brand, my relationships with my clients, and my bottom line.
But with a lot of tenacity and the willingness to keep showing up, I created a lighting method that allowed me to turn my side hustle into a six-figure business.
